If it’s done right, a facial can feel like a combination of a facial treatment, a shoulder treatment, reflexology and a hand/arm massage all at the same time. It is by far one of my favorite treatments. It can take years off your face and add a glowing, young, look to your complexion and your attitude.

A facial is a cosmetic treatment of the face. This often involves the application of a variety of skin treatments.   This may include steaming to open pores, exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, extraction of blackheads or clogged pores, application of creams, lotions, masks, peels and massage of the face, scalp and neck.   Specialized facials can be offered as well. They may include Vitamin infusing facials, utilizing Vitamin C, A or D;  oxygen facials in which a mist of pure oxygen is given as part of the treatment;  Collagen facials where specialized collagen sheets are placed on the face; and acne facials which target areas for extractions.

There are a great many different types of facials but they are all non-medical procedures designed to help the health and well-being of the skin and body.

A facial will cleanse, exfoliate and nourish the skin.   This in turn will promote clear, even, well-hydrated skin. It is one of the most popular spa services, beaten only by the massage.  A facial is given by a licensed esthetician with special training in skin care and can range from $60 - $180 or more.

Facials are also helpful if your skin is too dry or too oily.  Because it takes time for the skin to regenerate, it is ideal for a client to have a facial every four to six weeks.  But can be done four times a year whenever the season changes.  In cases of acne, more frequent facials may be obtained.
Facials are deep cleaning treatments that area applied to the face to remove impurities, add moisture or re-hydrate the skin, and eliminate clogged pores and blackheads and improve the overall feel, look and health of the skin.

Although facials were once thought to be a treatment only for women, men are realizing the benefits of facials as well and male facials are becoming more popular.

Things to be aware of:   If you have allergies to food products, ask what type of facial you will be having and what ingredients are in the applications.

For example:  Honey facials may use egg products and should be avoided by clients with allergies to eggs.   Likewise, some facial products may include lanolin and other products that may cause reactions in clients with allergies.

Make your aesthetician aware of any allergies to food and lotion products that you may have.
